Scheepjes is a Dutch yarn brand with roots in the textile industry of Veenendaal. Its modern collection is particularly useful to makers planning with colour: small motifs, coordinated palettes and long gradients appear throughout its knitting and crochet projects. Catona and Whirl illustrate two different ways the brand approaches that choice.

An industrial history and a modern revival
The official Scheepjes history traces the company’s background through Veenendaal’s wool processing and textile production. It describes a business that expanded from earlier forms of local wool work into factory production, reflecting the changing Dutch textile industry.
That history was interrupted. The company went bankrupt in 1988, and the old factory was subsequently demolished. In 2010, the De Bondt family revived the Scheepjes name after a gap of 22 years. The present brand therefore combines a historic textile identity with a later relaunch; it is not an uninterrupted version of the old factory business.
Catona and Whirl offer different kinds of colour
Catona is a fingering-weight yarn made from 100% mercerised cotton. Its solid-colour format is suited to choosing individual shades for motifs and colour combinations. The mercerised cotton has a smooth surface and a gentle sheen, which are relevant when comparing it with an unmercerised cotton alternative.
The original Whirl blend combines 60% cotton with 40% acrylic and is presented in long colour-changing cakes. Here, the sequence of shades becomes part of the design. A replacement with similar fibre and gauge can still produce a different result if its colour changes happen more quickly or in another order.
For a Scheepjes substitution, first decide what the project depends on: a specific solid palette, the surface of the cotton, or a continuous gradient. Match those characteristics alongside gauge and total length. For motifs, colour contrast deserves a sample; for a gradient project, consider where the transitions will fall within the finished shape.
