Sus Gebhard and the beginning of Gepard

Sus Gebhard established Gepard Garn in 1989. The company’s account places craftsmanship, textile culture and technical knowledge at the centre of its development. It also describes collaboration with small Italian family spinning mills whose work includes spinning and dyeing.

This gives Gepard a Danish design identity connected to Italian manufacturing expertise. The origin of a brand, the source of a fibre and the mill making the yarn are separate pieces of information.

A collection built from different fibre combinations

Gepard’s range should be explored product by product. A brushed mohair blend, a cotton yarn and a smooth wool yarn have different roles, even when they share the same brand name or a similar colour palette. Gepard also acts as an agent for other textile and knitting names. A shop offering those products alongside Gepard’s own yarns does not make them all Gepard-branded materials. Keep the manufacturer and product name attached when comparing listings.

When looking for a replacement, identify the defining feature of the original yarn: a visible halo, a particular fibre blend or a smooth stitch surface. Compare that feature alongside gauge and metreage. If two strands are used in the pattern, assess the combined sample after washing before deciding whether the replacement gives the result you want.
