A shared online home with roots in Spinrite

Yarnspirations grew out of Spinrite's yarn business. Spinrite's own history dates the company, in its present form, to 1952, when founder David Hay established it using the premises previously operated as Maitland Spinning Mills. This is the manufacturing company's background, rather than the launch date of the Yarnspirations website.

Spinrite introduced ecommerce in 2010 and brought its sites together under Yarnspirations.com in 2013. Its acquisition of Caron in 2011 and Coats & Clark in 2019 helped shape the group of craft names represented there. The website therefore acts as a shared storefront and source of project support for several established brands.

Starting with a pattern or a yarn

Yarnspirations organises yarn by brand, fibre, weight and use. Its pattern and learning sections include beginner material, technique guides and videos, giving you ways to understand a project before buying supplies. A pattern can be particularly useful when you want to see what a yarn is intended to make rather than judging it from a ball photograph alone.

For substitution, read the actual pattern's gauge, measurements and material list. Compare the named yarn with your proposed replacement by length, fibre blend and construction, then test the required stitch pattern. A chenille blanket yarn needs a different comparison from a smooth cotton or wool blend, even when both appear in the same retailer's catalogue.

The pattern library is also relevant to makers who cannot order directly from the webshop. Yarnspirations states that pattern downloads are available worldwide, while physical-product destinations and brand distribution restrictions depend on its current shipping rules. Check those separately before planning a purchase; access to a pattern does not establish delivery eligibility for its yarn.

Questions about Yarnspirations

Prices, brands and discount codes at Yarnspirations, based on the data we collect from the shop.

Compare all shops

Is Yarnspirations a single yarn brand?+

It is an online storefront and project resource bringing together several craft brands associated with Spinrite. These include Bernat, Caron, Patons, Red Heart and Lily Sugar'n Cream. Keep the individual brand and full yarn name when comparing products.

Does Yarnspirations offer free knitting and crochet patterns?+

Yes. It has free knitting and crochet patterns as well as other craft projects. Read each pattern's material list, gauge, skill level and instructions before deciding which yarn and tools you need.

Can I use Yarnspirations patterns outside North America?+

Yarnspirations states that its patterns are available to download worldwide. Direct ordering of physical products is a separate matter: consult the current shipping policy and any brand restrictions for your destination.

Do I have to use the exact yarn named in a pattern?+

An alternative may work, but the named yarn is a reference for the intended fabric. Compare fibre blend, length and construction, and check the pattern's gauge with a washed swatch. Calculate the replacement quantity from total length and your sample rather than copying the original ball count.
