About Filcolana yarn
Filcolana is a Danish yarn company with a collection built around colour, named yarn qualities and knitting designs. Its range includes fine yarns for everyday garments, wool for more substantial fabrics and silk mohair that can be used alone or held with another strand. The accompanying designer collections help makers see how those yarns work in finished clothing.

Arwetta and Tilia illustrate two different roles within the range. Arwetta blends 80% superwash merino with 20% nylon and was developed for durable children's garments, with socks another possible use. Tilia is a much finer blend of 70% kid mohair and 30% silk. Its halo can change the appearance of another yarn when the two are knitted together, adding a different surface to the resulting fabric.
Filcolana from 1952 to today
The company dates back to 1952. Nanna Gudmand-Høyer took over in 2009, continuing the business's development as a supplier of yarn for hand knitting and crochet. Today, its Danish base is in Kjellerup, where yarn arrives for distribution to retailers.
Filcolana develops its own colour ranges and works with spinning mills in Peru, England and Italy. That distinction is useful: it is a Danish yarn brand with an international production network, rather than a claim that its whole collection is spun in Denmark.
The relationship between individual yarns is an important part of choosing a Filcolana substitute. Replacing Arwetta on its own is a different task from replacing Arwetta held together with Tilia. In a two-strand design, the combined fabric is the reference: changing either strand can affect thickness, colour and drape. Compare the full combination and make a washed sample in the stitch pattern before deciding how much replacement yarn to buy.

Domande su Filcolana
Lavaggio, spessori, fibre naturali e alternative: risposte basate sui filati Filcolana presenti nel nostro catalogo.
Where is Filcolana yarn made?+
Filcolana is based in Denmark and works with spinning mills in Peru, England and Italy. Its official company information describes the yarn being finished and sent to its warehouse in Kjellerup. Check the individual quality for its specific origin.
What is the difference between Arwetta and Tilia?+
Arwetta is a fine merino and nylon yarn, with 210 metres per 50 grams. Tilia is a fine kid mohair and silk yarn, with 210 metres per 25 grams. Their construction and surface make them different despite the matching length per ball.
Can Filcolana Arwetta be used for socks?+
Yes. Filcolana identifies socks as one use for Arwetta, whose blend includes 20% nylon. Use the tension specified by your sock pattern and choose a fabric firm enough for the intended wear.
How do I replace a Filcolana combination held double?+
Compare the finished fabric made by both strands together. You can test another two-strand combination or a single yarn, but check tension, halo, drape and colour after washing. Two yarns of similar individual thickness do not automatically produce the same combined result.
