Lang Yarns, also styled LANGYARNS, is a Swiss family yarn business whose textile story reaches back to the nineteenth century. Its collection combines longstanding knitting ranges with newer yarns and pattern designs. Jawoll provides one practical example: a wool-nylon sock yarn with a separate reinforcement thread for heels and toes.

From a water-powered cotton mill to knitting yarns

The company uses 1867 as its heritage date, while its history records an earlier step in 1860, when Theodor Lang acquired a water mill in Reiden and developed mechanical cotton spinning. Later, under Ernst Lang, the business added equipment and began producing hand-knitting yarns.

During the twentieth century, the collection grew under the Lang family, with the brand name becoming part of its hand-knitting business. The official history describes a sixth-generation family company and cooperation with industrial partners in Europe.

Longstanding ranges and newer constructions

Jawoll combines 75% wool with 25% nylon and includes a spool of reinforcement yarn in each 50-gram ball. This is a product-specific detail, not a feature to assume for every Lang sock yarn. It illustrates how intended use can affect both the blend and the material supplied with it.

The wider collection includes different fibres and seasonal designs, so a familiar brand name should not replace careful reading of the label. A yarn intended for a textured sweater and one developed for socks may present very different requirements.

When choosing a substitute, keep the complete range name and compare the formal composition, gauge and length. For socks, include any reinforcement used in the original pattern in your assessment. For garments, judge the washed sample’s density and movement alongside the colour. Those details help distinguish a genuine practical alternative from a yarn that merely looks similar in the ball.

Is Lang Yarns a Swiss brand?+

Yes. Its official history is rooted in Reiden, Switzerland, and describes a family textile business. That origin is distinct from the production location of an individual modern range.

Why does Lang refer to 1867 when its mill history starts earlier?+

LANGYARNS uses “since 1867” as its heritage statement. Its historical account also records Theodor Lang’s purchase of a water mill in 1860. These refer to different milestones in the company story.

What is Lang Jawoll made from?+

Classic Jawoll contains 75% superwash wool and 25% nylon. Related Jawoll products have their own specifications, so retain the complete range name when comparing yarns.

What is the extra thread in a Jawoll ball for?+

Lang supplies it as reinforcement for areas such as sock heels and toes. It is an intentional part of the product, so keep it in mind when following a pattern or comparing alternatives.
