BC Garn is a yarn brand with Danish roots and a focus on natural fibres, colour and organic yarns. Its collection includes wool, cotton, linen, silk and alpaca, alongside blends that combine different fibres in a single yarn. Several ranges are GOTS-certified, giving knitters the option to choose yarns with documented organic credentials. Bio Shetland offers woollen-spun texture for colourwork, while Bio Balance combines wool and cotton in a lightweight blend.

A family background in yarn and weaving
BC Garn was founded in Denmark by Bo Carstensen, whose family worked with textiles long before the brand took shape. His mother was a weaver and his father traded wool for rugs. According to the company’s history, his mother commissioned yarns when she could not find the materials and colours she needed for her weaving. That background helps explain BC Garn’s longstanding emphasis on natural fibres and varied colour palettes.
In spring 2018, Bo and Marianna Carstensen retired and passed the business to Britta and Carsten Kremke. Britta brought her own background in yarn retail, having learned to knit in her mother’s yarn shop as a child. The new owners continued developing BC Garn in the tradition of its Danish founders.
Understanding the BC Garn range
Bio Shetland GOTS is a fine, woollen-spun organic wool yarn developed with colourwork in mind. Despite its name, its wool does not come from the Shetland Islands: BC Garn identifies South American farms as the source, with spinning and dyeing carried out in Turkey.
Bio Balance GOTS blends 55% wool with 45% cotton. Its gently heathered appearance comes from the two fibres absorbing dye differently. Alba GOTS is a pure cotton option, while Semilla GOTS is a pure wool yarn with a chlorine-free soft-wash treatment. These are distinct choices, with different care requirements as well as different fibre compositions.
Organic certification should be checked at yarn level. BC Garn offers both certified and non-certified ranges; the brand name alone does not establish that a particular yarn is organic or GOTS-certified. Look at the named range, its fibre content and its current care instructions.

Is BC Garn a Danish yarn brand?+
BC Garn was founded in Denmark by Bo Carstensen and retains its Danish heritage. In 2018, Bo and Marianna Carstensen handed the business to Britta and Carsten Kremke. Danish origins do not mean that every yarn is manufactured in Denmark.
Are all BC Garn yarns organic or GOTS-certified?+
No. Several ranges, including Bio Balance, Bio Shetland, Alba and Semilla, carry GOTS certification. Certification applies to specific products, rather than automatically covering everything sold under the brand. Check the full yarn name and current product information.
Where are BC Garn yarns made?+
Production varies by range. Bio Balance is spun and dyed in Turkey. Semilla GOTS uses wool from Argentina and is spun and dyed in Italy. Alba’s cotton is grown, spun and dyed in Turkey.
Does Bio Shetland come from the Shetland Islands?+
No. BC Garn states that the wool comes from South America and is spun and dyed in Turkey. Bio Shetland is a woollen-spun organic wool yarn designed with projects such as Fair Isle knitting in mind.
Can BC Garn yarns be machine washed?+
Some can. Alba GOTS allows machine washing at 40°C and Semilla GOTS a delicate cycle at a maximum of 30°C. Bio Balance’s listed instructions specify cool hand washing. Always follow the instructions for your particular yarn.
