About Hedgehog Fibres yarn
Hedgehog Fibres is an Irish yarn and fibre studio in Little Island, Cork. Its hand dyed colours range from subtle, earthy combinations to saturated brights and fluorescent accents. Speckles and variegation are central to its identity: a simple knitted fabric can show a changing mix of colours without requiring a complicated stitch pattern.

The studio offers different yarn bases, alongside fibre for spinning. A colourway is therefore only part of a yarn's identity. The same colour name on two bases can produce different depth, softness and fabric, depending on the fibres and how the strand is constructed.
Beata Jezek and the beginnings of the studio
Founder Beata Jezek grew up in Bratislava before moving to Ireland. In her account of the company's beginnings, losing her job during the 2008 financial crisis led her to learn to knit. Dissatisfaction with the colours available encouraged her to experiment with dyeing at home.
Members of her knitting group began buying the results, followed by sales through Etsy and her own website. She opened a small studio in 2010. The name comes from her surname: Jezek means hedgehog in Slovak. That personal interest in colour still provides a clear thread through the collection.
Letting hand dyed colour shape the fabric
With Hedgehog Fibres, the knitted sample matters as much as the photograph of a skein. Variegated colours may form small flashes, broader patches or pooling, depending on stitch count and construction. A sweater knitted in the round can show the same colourway differently from a flat scarf.
For a substitute, compare the yarn base separately from the colour effect. Match fibre content, length per gram and washed gauge, then decide whether you want similarly scattered colour or a quieter fabric. When using several hand dyed skeins, alternating them can help blend variation. Swatch with your intended stitch pattern before deciding how to handle the colours.

Questions about Hedgehog Fibres
Washing, weights, natural fibres and substitutes — answers drawn from the Hedgehog Fibres yarns in our catalogue.
Where is Hedgehog Fibres yarn dyed?+
Hedgehog Fibres is based in Little Island, Cork, Ireland, and describes its yarns and spinning fibres as hand dyed in small batches.
Who founded Hedgehog Fibres?+
Beata Jezek founded the business after experimenting with dyeing yarn at home. She opened a small studio in 2010. The name refers to the Slovak meaning of her surname, hedgehog.
Will a Hedgehog Fibres colourway look exactly like its photograph?+
Hand dyeing creates variation between skeins, and screens also affect colour appearance. The arrangement of colour in your fabric depends on stitch count and project shape. A swatch gives a better guide than a skein photograph alone.
How do I choose a substitute for Hedgehog Fibres yarn?+
Match the exact base's composition, length and gauge first. Then compare the colour effect: a solid yarn will change the look of a design written for speckles or variegation. Buy enough yarn for the whole project and test the colours together after washing.
