Werner Große-Bölting established the company in Rhede, Westphalia, in 1994 as a wool wholesaler. The business grew by supplying retailers with hand-knitting and crochet yarns across a range of materials and price points. After the founder’s death in 2016, management passed to his wife Mechthild Große-Bölting and daughter Jil Marie Schaffeldt.

Its official catalogue remains organised around material and product categories rather than a single signature fibre. Seasonal and effect yarns sit alongside standard yarns, reflecting the needs of shops serving different kinds of makers.

Reading the product name carefully

For a knitter, the legal company name is less useful than the complete name on the yarn label. Keep that name when looking for care instructions, length or an alternative. “G-B” identifies the supplier, but it cannot tell you whether a specific yarn is pure wool, a cotton blend or a synthetic effect yarn.

The diversity of the collection makes construction especially important. A decorative strand can produce a very different surface from a smooth basic yarn, even if their recommended needles look similar. Sock projects also require a different assessment from decorative accessories or summer garments.

Compare the particular product’s composition, gauge and total length. If working from an older label, confirm the exact yarn rather than assuming that a current seasonal range is its direct replacement. This gives a firmer basis for choosing materials than the company name alone.
