About Edy Angola yarn

Edy Angola is a Danish yarn brand with a personal story behind its name. Its range includes Alpaca Merino and Mohair Edition Recy, two blended yarns that combine animal fibres with materials chosen for a different fabric character. The names give a starting point, but the full compositions reveal more about how each yarn should be used.

Alpaca Merino contains 66% merino, 26% alpaca and 8% polyamide, with approximately 155 metres in a 50-gram ball. Mohair Edition Recy combines 40% recycled cotton, 26% merino, 21% mohair and 13% polyamide, at approximately 165 metres per 50 grams. The recycled component belongs specifically to the cotton in this blend; the yarn is not described as entirely recycled.

The person behind the Edy Angola name

Founder Ivan Sinding traces the inspiration to a 2014 Danida project exploring alpaca wool production in Bolivia. During visits to mills in La Paz and alpaca herds in the Andes, his driver was Edy Angola. Alongside working several jobs, Edy volunteered as a football coach for street children. His energy and generosity made a lasting impression on Sinding.

The brand takes its name from that person and his outlook on life. The connection is a story of an encounter in Bolivia, rather than a reference to the African country Angola or a claim that the yarn is manufactured there.

For knitters comparing Edy Angola yarn alternatives, the two blends should be considered separately. Merino and alpaca bring different qualities from a blend containing cotton and mohair, even where ball weights and lengths look fairly close. Match the intended tension, then assess the fabric's surface, drape and recovery. That is particularly useful for garments where a small change in fabric weight or stretch can alter the fit.

Who was Edy Angola?+

Edy Angola was the driver Ivan Sinding met during an alpaca-related project in Bolivia in 2014. Sinding's account describes his work, optimism and voluntary football coaching as the inspiration for the brand's name.

Is Edy Angola yarn from Angola?+

The name refers to a person, not the yarn's country of manufacture. The brand's origin story is connected to Bolivia. Use the individual yarn label for production information rather than inferring it from the name.

Is Alpaca Merino a pure alpaca and merino yarn?+

No. The published composition is 66% merino, 26% alpaca and 8% polyamide. That small synthetic component should remain part of the comparison when looking for a substitute.

Is Mohair Edition Recy entirely recycled?+

No. Its composition includes 40% recycled cotton alongside 26% merino, 21% mohair and 13% polyamide. Compare the complete blend and check the care instructions for the finished project.
