Yarns and free patterns from a Norwegian design company
- Norwegian brand
- Free patterns
- Yarn groups
- Broad fibre range
DROPS Design brings yarns, patterns and knitting instruction together in one extensive collection. Based in Oslo, the company offers materials ranging from cotton and wool to alpaca blends and fine mohair combinations. Its free pattern library is a central part of the brand, allowing knitters and crocheters to explore a yarn through projects written specifically for it.

Yarn and design developed together
With more than forty years in knitting and crochet design, DROPS has built a substantial archive of patterns and catalogues. Garnstudio is the website where this work is presented: patterns, yarn information, tutorials and lessons sit alongside one another rather than being separate resources.
For someone using an older DROPS pattern, that archive is especially useful. The design may remain available even when the recommended yarn or shade has changed. Read the current yarn information together with the pattern, and check any notes about yarn alternatives before buying materials.
How the DROPS yarn groups work
DROPS divides its yarns into groups A to F according to strand thickness and knitting tension. Group A contains the finest yarns and group F the thickest. The system helps readers identify yarns that can be considered for the same patterns, and the brand also provides guidance on combining strands to reach other groups.
A yarn group is a practical starting point, but it does not describe every quality of the resulting fabric. A cotton yarn and an alpaca blend can belong to a comparable gauge range while producing different textures. The number of balls needed can also change because their lengths differ.
When choosing a DROPS substitute, use the group as a guide and then compare composition, construction and total metreage. If the pattern holds two yarns together, assess the combined fabric rather than replacing each strand by weight category alone. A washed swatch gives a more useful answer than the group letter on its own.

Questions about DROPS Design
Washing, weights, natural fibres and substitutes — answers drawn from the DROPS Design yarns in our catalogue.
Are DROPS Design and Garnstudio the same brand?+
Garnstudio is the website where DROPS Design presents its yarns, patterns and tutorials. When searching for a yarn or checking a pattern, you will commonly encounter both names together.
Are DROPS knitting and crochet patterns free?+
Yes. DROPS publishes a large collection of free knitting and crochet patterns on Garnstudio, alongside tutorials, yarn information and guidance on using alternative yarns.
What do DROPS yarn groups A to F mean?+
They group yarns by thickness and knitting tension, from the finest in A to the thickest in F. They help identify alternatives but do not guarantee identical fibre behaviour or texture.
Can I substitute another yarn in the same DROPS group?+
It is a useful starting point. Check the pattern’s gauge, fibre content and construction, and recalculate the total length required. DROPS notes that the number of balls changes when metreage differs.
