About Rauma yarn
Rauma Garn is closely connected with Norwegian wool and the mill at Veblungsnes in Romsdalen. Its own wool yarns form the centre of a broader collection, accompanied by patterns that carry traditional knitting materials into current clothing design. For knitters interested in colourwork and wool with a visible natural character, the precise yarn family is an important part of the choice.

Finull, Fivel and 3-tråds Strikkegarn are among the yarns produced at Rauma's factory. They should be compared separately: the shared maker and wool background do not mean they have the same thickness or make the same fabric.
From a small mill in Romsdalen
Rauma's mill history dates to 1927. Its own account describes beginnings in a small waterside building with three employees and basic machinery. The business grew while retaining its family connection and its location among the mountains and fjord of Romsdalen.
Today, the company distinguishes seven wool yarns made at its factory from the rest of its range. The wider collection includes fibres such as merino, alpaca, linen, cotton, mohair and silk, developed with suppliers elsewhere. This distinction matters when someone is specifically looking for Norwegian wool spun by Rauma.
Choosing a yarn for colourwork
For a Rauma colourwork pattern, compare more than the number of stitches in the gauge. The surface of a wool yarn affects how colours meet and how the strands settle after washing. A smoother replacement may give a sharper or more slippery fabric, while a loftier wool can make the same stitch count feel fuller.
Start with the original product's composition, length and construction, then make a swatch using the actual colourwork technique. Measure after washing and drying, including row gauge when the pattern's motifs or shaping require it. If the project involves felting, test that separately and choose a yarn intended to felt. Preserve the characteristics that make the garment work, whether those are warmth, surface texture or the balance between the colours.

Where does Rauma yarn come from?+
Rauma's wool mill is in Veblungsnes, Romsdalen, Norway, with a history dating to 1927. The wider brand collection also includes yarns developed with other suppliers.
Is every Rauma yarn made at its Norwegian factory?+
No. Rauma distinguishes its own factory-made wool yarns from the broader collection. Its official list includes Fivel, Lamull, Finull, Vams, Vandre, 3-tråds Strikkegarn and 2-tråds Gammelserie.
Can I replace Rauma Finull with Fivel?+
They are separate yarn qualities. Check their length, gauge and fabric rather than treating the shared brand as a guarantee of compatibility. A replacement may require changes to the pattern or to the yarn quantities.
What should I look for in a substitute for Rauma colourwork yarn?+
Match washed gauge, including row gauge where needed, and compare wool character, loft and colour contrast. Swatch in the pattern's colourwork technique; a plain stockinette sample may not show the same tension or surface.
